In Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district, a 39-year-old man with a criminal record was fatally beaten allegedly by a group of individuals, with footage of the attack circulating on social media platforms on Friday.
The violent incident occurred in the Lajpatpur area, according to Kotwali station house officer (SHO) Manish Singal who spoke to PTI.
Family members of the victim, Sushil Chaube, reported that he was attacked by a mob wielding sticks on the evening of November 25.
"He was transported to a hospital on November 26, where he succumbed to injuries the following day. His family contacted authorities after his death. We were not aware of the incident beforehand," SHO Singal explained.
"We are investigating the individual who recorded the video. According to medical professionals, Chaube had just one injury mark on his hand, which they believe couldn't have been fatal. We are awaiting the post-mortem report before registering an FIR. Several individuals named by the deceased's relatives have been detained for questioning," the officer added.
Singal noted that Chaube was designated as a "monitored offender" at both Kotwali and Gopalganj police stations, with approximately 30 cases filed against him, including charges of robbery and assault.
The disturbing video depicts around 15 men assaulting Chaube with sticks while shouting instructions to break his legs, and others can be heard demanding that he be dragged.
Sudhir Chaube, the victim's elder brother, has identified several of the alleged perpetrators and is demanding stringent action against them.
