Kanpur:

A tragic end befell what once began as a love story in Uttar Pradesh.

On Wednesday, a woman in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, took her own life during a video call with her husband following an altercation between them.

Shubham Diwakar, who struggled with alcoholism, returned home to the Ramlala Mohalla area of Rawatpur after work on Wednesday evening and demanded money from his wife, Mona, to purchase alcohol. When she refused, Diwakar became furious and severely beat her. After the violent assault, he took money from her and left the residence to drink.

Sixteen minutes later, a distressed Mona reportedly initiated a WhatsApp video call to him and hanged herself while he watched. Diwakar allegedly hurried home to rescue her, but found the door locked from inside. Police, alerted by neighbors, broke down the door to gain entry. By then, Mona had already passed away. Officers attempted CPR to revive her, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Mona and Shubham Diwakar had married for love seven years ago. She leaves behind her husband and two children. Diwakar was employed at a private company, while Mona worked as a 'welcome girl,' greeting guests at wedding functions to help support their family.

When her coworkers learned of her death, they rushed to the postmortem facility where her body had been taken. The outraged women surrounded Mona's husband and physically attacked him. The disturbance persisted for approximately two hours. Mona's friends also claimed that Diwakar had erased all call history from Mona's mobile phone to eliminate evidence.

Rawatpur police station officer-in-charge Manoj Mishra stated that Mona's family has not yet filed any complaint. He assured that appropriate action would be taken if a complaint is received.

Meanwhile, neighbors of the couple have alleged that Diwakar regularly abused her after consuming alcohol.
