Tomato prices in India have soared 43% in just one month, reaching Rs 52.87 per kg by November 26. Tomato Prices Surge 43% In A Month: Data Shows Regional Divide

Tomato prices across India have experienced a dramatic increase, creating significant challenges for both consumers and retailers nationwide.

According to the Department of Consumer Affairs, retail tomato prices reached Rs 52.87 per kg as of November 26, representing a substantial 43% increase from Rs 37.02 just one month prior.

The data reveals a notable regional price disparity throughout the country. Andaman & Nicobar Islands currently face the highest prices at Rs 96.67 per kg, with Mizoram following at Rs 92.18 and Delhi at Rs 80 per kg.

Other northeastern states are also experiencing significant price increases, with Manipur at Rs 78.4 and Sikkim at Rs 71.67 per kg.

Interestingly, southern states, which are major tomato producers, offer relatively lower prices. Consumers in Telangana can purchase tomatoes at Rs 31.36 per kg, while those in Andhra Pradesh pay approximately Rs 38.46.

The price escalation has been consistent and rapid. Just three days earlier, prices had increased to Rs 51.12 from Rs 46.26 a week prior, before reaching today's rate of Rs 52.87.

Quick-commerce platforms are charging even higher prices, exacerbating the situation for consumers. In Delhi NCR, Blinkit lists tomatoes at Rs 110 per kg, while Swiggy Instamart and Zepto charge Rs 96 and Rs 92 respectively. Amazon Fresh and BigBasket offer slightly lower rates at Rs 87, though these figures still substantially exceed the government's official retail price for Delhi.

To provide some relief, the National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India (NCCF) has begun selling tomatoes at Rs 52 per kg in the capital city.
