Supreme Court Urges Comedian Samay Raina to Host Show Promoting Dignity and Achievements of Individuals with Spinal Muscular Atrophy

The Supreme Court has requested comedian Samay Raina to host awareness shows featuring individuals with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, emphasizing dignity over financial compensation. The court highlighted the achievements of those with the condition and called for legislation protecting persons with disabilities from offensive remarks, suggesting that comedy platforms could be used to celebrate accomplishments and generate funds for treatment.

The Supreme Court today requested comic Samay Raina to consider hosting a show featuring individuals affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy to raise awareness about the condition. The court emphasized to the comic, who had faced issues for his jokes about those with the condition, that they seek dignity rather than financial compensation. Spinal muscular atrophy is a genetic disorder characterized by muscle weakness and deterioration.

Senior Advocate Aparajita Singh, representing an organization advocating for individuals with this condition, stated that Raina's comments mocked and degraded affected children. "All these children are accomplished and highly talented. When such comments are made on a platform such as this, it becomes difficult for crowdfunding," she explained.

Chief Justice Surya Kant concurred, noting, "One is in Microsoft, one is in Michigan State University, one is a classical singer, another is an Assamese writer and publisher... one is a PhD in Bioinformatics."

"Samay Raina says he deposited Rs 2.50 lakh. But we don't want that. We are here for our dignity," Singh emphasized.

The court subsequently urged the Centre to consider implementing stringent legislation to protect persons with disabilities from offensive remarks. "Why don't you think of a very stringent law which is on the same lines like the SC/ST Act, where there is punishment if you demean them," the bench advised Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. Mehta agreed, stating, "Humour cannot be at the cost of someone's dignity."

The court then suggested that Raina host a show for those affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy. "They don't want your money. They want dignity and respect. Use your platform to show their achievements," the bench stated.

The court indicated that Raina and fellow comics should invite persons with disabilities to these shows, which could serve to generate funds for providing timely treatment to individuals with disabilities. The court expressed confidence that if the respondents, including Raina, demonstrate sincerity about promoting the achievements of persons with disabilities, these individuals would participate in their platforms.

"We hope and expect that such few memorable events will take place before we hear matter the next date. Let such two programmes be held twice a month," the bench concluded.
