Election Commission Instructs State Officers to Prepare for Voter Roll Revision by September 30

Following Bihar's example, the Election Commission has announced that Special Intensive Revision will be implemented nationwide.
New Delhi:
The Election Commission has directed its state election officers to be prepared for Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by September 30, suggesting the voter list cleanup initiative could commence as early as October-November.
Officials reported that during a conference of state chief electoral officers (CEOs) held in the capital earlier this month, the EC leadership instructed them to be ready for the SIR implementation within 10 to 15 days. For enhanced clarity, a September 30 deadline was established.
The CEOs have been instructed to ensure their state voter lists, published following the previous SIR, are ready for use.
Many state CEOs have already made voter lists from their last SIR available on their websites.
The Delhi CEO's website features the voter list from 2008, marking the last intensive revision conducted in the national capital.
In Uttarakhand, the final SIR occurred in 2006, with that electoral roll now accessible on the state CEO's website.
Each state's most recent SIR will serve as the reference point, similar to how Bihar's 2003 voter list is being utilized by the EC for its intensive revision process.
Most states conducted their last SIR between 2002 and 2004 and have nearly completed mapping current electors against those from the previous intensive revision.
The Election Commission has confirmed that following Bihar, the SIR will be implemented throughout the entire country.
Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are scheduled for 2026.
The primary objective of this intensive revision is to identify and remove foreign illegal migrants by verifying their birthplace.
This initiative gains significance amid ongoing crackdowns in various states targeting illegal foreign migrants, particularly those from Bangladesh and Myanmar.
