India Restores Full Visa Access for Chinese Nationals After Five-Year Suspension: Boosting Bilateral Relations

India has officially reinstated its "fully functional" visa regime for Chinese nationals seeking tourism and business opportunities, ending a five-year suspension that began following border tensions in 2020.

Speaking at a weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed, "Visas for tourists are being given to Chinese nationals, and business visas were being given earlier. The visa regime of tourism and business, etc, is fully functional."

The global resumption of tourist visa issuance to Chinese citizens began in November 2025, following a limited reopening initiated in July of the same year. Business visas had already been available before this latest announcement.

This visa restoration represents one of several "people-centric" confidence-building measures agreed upon by both nations in 2025. Other significant developments include the resumption of direct commercial flights in October 2025 and the revival of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra pilgrimage.

These initiatives are anticipated to significantly enhance tourism, trade, and interpersonal connections between the world's two most populous countries.

In parallel developments, China has expanded its visa policies to welcome international talent across various sectors, aiming to accelerate technological innovation and economic growth.

During a September 2025 press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that "In a globalised world, the cross-border flow of talent is instrumental in global technological and economic advancement. China welcomes talents from various sectors and fields across the world to come and find their footing in China for the progress of humanity and career success."

Earlier in August, China introduced a new "K visa" category specifically designed to attract young professionals in science and technology fields. This followed an amendment to the country's entry and exit regulations approved by the State Council.

According to Xinhua News Agency, these new visa regulations took effect on October 1 after Premier Li Qiang signed the implementation decree.

The K visa offers significant advantages compared to China's existing 12 standard visa classifications, including multiple entry privileges, extended validity periods, and longer permitted stays.

K visa holders can engage in academic and cultural exchanges, scientific research, technology development, entrepreneurship, and related business activities while in China.

A notable feature of the K visa is that applicants need not secure invitations from Chinese employers or institutions. Eligible individuals meeting the specified age, education, and professional experience requirements can apply through a streamlined process.
