November 26, 2025, marks the 17th anniversary of the Mumbai terror attacks.
New Delhi:
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday reaffirmed India's steadfast position against terrorism as the nation commemorated the 17th anniversary of the devastating Mumbai attack on November 26, 2008. The tragedy claimed 166 lives, left 300 injured, and brought one of the world's busiest metropolitan centers to a complete standstill.
In a statement shared on X, the External Affairs Minister noted that the global community continues to remember both the victims and the courageous responders who battled during the 2008 terror attacks.
"Zero tolerance for terror in all forms and manifestations. The world remembers the victims and heroes of 26/11. Reaffirm our resolve to bring all those involved to justice," Jaishankar stated.
November 26, 2025, represents 17 years since terrorists from Pakistan-supported Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) unleashed chaos throughout India's financial hub, Mumbai, in 2008.
Commonly known as 26/11, these synchronized attacks executed by 10 terrorists sent shockwaves across India and internationally. The terrorists entered Mumbai on the evening of November 26, 2008, via maritime routes and conducted a four-day siege that resulted in 166 fatalities and 300 injuries.
The locations were strategically selected after reconnaissance to maximize impact, including the Taj and Oberoi Hotels, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the Jewish center at Nariman House, Cama Hospital, Metro Cinema, and Leopold Cafe. These venues were chosen because they were frequented by international visitors alongside a significant portion of Mumbai's workforce.
The emotional wounds from this tragic event continue to affect those who experienced it firsthand and families who suffered losses.
The bullet marks visible at Leopold Cafe and Nariman House, the memorial bust of Assistant Sub-Inspector Tukaram Omble who sacrificed his life capturing Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab (the only Pakistani terrorist who survived), and the streets of South Mumbai preserve the memory of this horrific terror attack.
The remaining nine LeT terrorists were killed during operations, while Kasab was apprehended.
In May 2010, Kasab received the death penalty and was subsequently executed in a high-security prison in Pune two years later.
