New Delhi:
The US Embassy in India on Wednesday commemorated the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks while expressing solidarity with survivors and affected families. In their statement, they reaffirmed support for India's ongoing efforts to bring the perpetrators of this horrific attack to justice.
Through a post shared on social media platform X, the US Embassy emphasized its commitment to continue working alongside the Indian government in combating terrorism to ensure citizen safety and security.
"Today marks the 17th anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai. We honour the memory of the victims lost and stand in solidarity with the survivors and families. The United States has long supported India's efforts to ensure those responsible for these attacks are brought to justice. In a major step forward, the United States extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India this year for his role in planning the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, resulting in the tragic loss of 166 lives, including six Americans," stated the US Embassy's official X account.
"Rana's extradition is a critical step toward seeking justice for the victims who were killed in the heinous attacks and their families. As we remember the victims of 26/11, we reaffirm our determination to continue to fight against acts of terror together with the Government of India to ensure the safety and security of our citizens," the statement continued.
The 26/11 attacks, commonly referred to as the 2008 Mumbai attacks, consisted of 12 coordinated terrorist strikes that occurred between November 26 and 29. These attacks were carried out by 10 operatives of the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba.
The death toll reached 175, including nine terrorists, 26 foreign nationals, and 20 security personnel. Only one attacker, Ajmal Kasab, was captured alive and subsequently executed following legal proceedings.
The terrorists targeted multiple prominent locations throughout South Mumbai, including the iconic Taj Mahal Hotel, Oberoi Trident, Nariman House, Colaba Causeway, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus during the devastating attack.
Earlier this year, Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian citizen and close associate of key 26/11 conspirator David Coleman Headley (also known as Dawood Gilani), was extradited to India after the United States Supreme Court dismissed his review petition on April 4. Rana's alleged involvement in planning the 2008 Mumbai attacks places him among the most significant defendants in India's ongoing battle against cross-border terrorism.
