Suspended For Skipping SIR Meet, UP Official Kills Self Day Before Wedding

A 25-year-old clerk in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur committed suicide after reportedly being suspended for missing a meeting related to the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Sudhir Kumar was discovered hanging in his home on Tuesday morning, just one day before his scheduled wedding ceremony.

According to a police complaint filed by Kumar's sister, he had been suspended after failing to attend an official meeting on Sunday because he was busy with preparations for his upcoming wedding.

"My brother became mentally distressed following the suspension," she stated in her written complaint.

She further claimed that an official visited Kumar's residence Tuesday morning to inform him of his suspension.

"The harassment by officials was too much for my brother to bear," she added.

As the December 4 deadline approaches, multiple states have reported deaths among officials involved in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. Family members have attributed these deaths to excessive work pressure and stress.

In West Bengal's Nadia district, a female booth level officer (BLO) was found hanging at her home on Saturday. Her family stated that she had been experiencing significant stress related to SIR duties and died by suicide.

In Madhya Pradesh, two teachers serving as BLOs for the SIR exercise died from "illness" in Raisen and Damoh districts on Friday.
