A police investigation is ongoing following the incident where a college student was set on fire during his birthday celebration.
In a disturbing incident in Mumbai, a 21-year-old college student suffered significant burn injuries after one of his friends deliberately set him on fire during what was supposed to be a birthday celebration in the Kurla area on Tuesday. Police have subsequently arrested five individuals involved in the incident.
Abdul Rehman Khan received a phone call from a friend early in the morning, inviting him to meet with a group of friends. Upon his arrival, the five friends initially conducted what appeared to be traditional birthday celebrations, having Khan cut a cake before throwing eggs and stones at him.
The situation escalated dangerously when one friend, identified as Ayaz Malik, retrieved a bottle of petrol from his scooter and doused Khan with the flammable liquid. Despite Khan's protests and objections, Malik ignited the fuel using a lighter, setting the victim ablaze.
In desperation, Khan ran to a nearby watchman's cabin seeking assistance. The watchman helped extinguish the flames with water. Khan was immediately transported to a hospital where he is currently receiving treatment for serious burn injuries to his face, hands, and chest.
Following Khan's statement, authorities filed an FIR (First Information Report) under section 110 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, which pertains to attempt to commit culpable homicide.
All five individuals involved in the incident have been taken into police custody. The arrested individuals include the primary suspect Ayaz Malik, along with Ashraf Malik, Kasim Chowdhary, Huzaifa Khan, and Sharif Sheikh. They have been remanded to police custody as the investigation continues.
