West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee experienced a brief delay in her convoy movement on Jessore Road when it was halted for approximately 15 minutes due to a protest. Family members of a deceased individual were demonstrating with allegations that one of the dead man's eyes had been removed while his body was stored at the morgue in Barasat Medical College, according to a senior police official.
The Chief Minister was en route back to Kolkata after delivering a public address at a rally in Bangaon, North 24 Parganas district.
A senior police officer explained, "The convoy was unable to proceed on Jessore Road where relatives of a deceased person had organized a demonstration. They claimed that one eye of the deceased had been removed while at the morgue and requested the Chief Minister's intervention in the matter."
In response to the situation, Banerjee provided assurance to the family that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted into the incident.
"If ADG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar provides me with the complete details, I will ensure action is taken. He will gather information from the family tomorrow. Following that, preliminary inquiries will be initiated. I will provide employment for the deceased's mother. She will receive her appointment letter within two days. Should anyone be found responsible for this incident, there will be a thorough investigation," Banerjee stated.
Senior law enforcement officials arrived at the location to manage the situation and ensure the safe passage of the Chief Minister's convoy, the officer reported.
"An investigation into the allegations is currently in progress, and the matter will be addressed with strict measures if any wrongdoing is confirmed," the official added.
The deceased was identified as 34-year-old Pritam Ghosh from Barasat Kazipara's 1 No. Railgate area.
According to the officer, the family discovered the eye was missing when they arrived to retrieve the body, which prompted them to organize the protest that intercepted the Chief Minister's convoy.
