Elderly Man Shot Dead Near Patna, Two Attackers Lynched by Villagers in Violent Incident

An 80-year-old man was fatally shot while sitting outside his residence by two assailants, who were subsequently lynched by an angry mob in a village near Patna on Monday evening.

This violent incident occurred shortly after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resumed office with promises of improved governance.

According to Patna Superintendent of Police (East) Parichay Kumar, the attack happened between 4:30 and 5 pm in Dommanchak village within the jurisdiction of Gopalpur police station.

The officer reported that two individuals arrived on a motorcycle at Asharfi Rai's home in Dommanchak village and fired multiple shots at him.

"The perpetrators attempted to escape on their motorcycle after the shooting. However, they were quickly pursued by villagers who had been alerted by the commotion. The villagers managed to apprehend them and subsequently lynched both attackers, resulting in their immediate deaths," the police officer stated.

Asharfi Rai, who sustained serious injuries, was transported to Patna Medical College and Hospital where he later succumbed to his wounds.

The police officer confirmed that a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was sent to the crime scenes to gather evidence.

"The FSL team has collected spent cartridges from the initial crime scene. Additionally, we have retrieved bricks, stones, and clubs from the second location. Police are also reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding areas," Officer Kumar elaborated.

When questioned about a potential land dispute motive, the officer indicated that the investigation was ongoing and it was "premature" to make such determinations.

The identities of the attackers remain unknown, according to the officer.

Patna Police are continuing their investigation and taking statements from the victim's family to ascertain the precise motivation behind the murder.

"All three bodies have been recovered and sent for post-mortem examination," Officer Kumar confirmed.
