Police investigations revealed that the suspects had attempted to sell the stolen jewelry at multiple locations.
Bahraich (UP):
In a shocking case of familial betrayal, a 70-year-old man allegedly collaborated with his daughter-in-law and her 16-year-old son to steal jewelry valued at approximately Rs 50 lakh from his own daughter's residence after sedating her, according to police statements on Tuesday.
Authorities have apprehended the daughter-in-law, while efforts continue to locate the elderly man and the minor involved in the theft.
The incident took place in the Dargah Sharif police station jurisdiction of Bahraich district. The primary suspect, Ravindra Khetan, had visited his daughter Soni Bansal's home accompanied by his daughter-in-law, Shivani Khetan, and her teenage son.
Soni, who is married to local businessman Manoj Tulsiyan, resides in DSL Green City Colony within the same police jurisdiction.
In his formal complaint, Tulsiyan recounted that on November 18, while he was at his business establishment with his son, he returned home to discover his wife unconscious. "We initially sought medical treatment for her in Bahraich, but when her condition showed no improvement, we transferred her to Apollo Hospital in Lucknow," he explained.
Tulsiyan noted that immediately following his wife's transfer to Lucknow for treatment, his in-laws departed from the residence without notifying anyone. Upon the family's return to Bahraich on November 21, they discovered that gold, silver, and diamond jewelry worth approximately Rs 50 lakh had been stolen from their secure storage.
Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Ashok Kumar Singh confirmed that authorities registered a case against the three suspects on November 22 based on the complaint received. Multiple police units analyzed mobile phone records, surveillance footage, and additional technical evidence during their investigation.
"On Monday, law enforcement officers apprehended Shivani Khetan near Gullabeer Temple and recovered the stolen valuables from her possession," the ASP reported. The elderly suspect and the minor remain at large.
Preliminary findings indicate that Shivani was enticed after observing the valuable jewelry and devised the theft plan after examining the premises.
According to police, she allegedly mixed depression medication into her sister-in-law's tea, causing her to lose consciousness before fleeing with the valuable items.
Investigators also discovered that the suspects had attempted to sell the stolen jewelry at various establishments but were unsuccessful as jewelers requested identification documents.
Shivani has been remanded to judicial custody, and efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects are ongoing.
