HN Sujayendra (as seen in this photo) is the prime accused in this case.
Bengaluru police are investigating a fraud case where a doctor was deceived of Rs 2.7 crore through a fake land development project near Kempegowda International Airport. Dr Raja Langer reported to authorities that he was enticed by promises of purchasing a "Heritage Homes" property allegedly being developed on land owned by the Yadugiri Yatiraja Mutt.
According to the FIR filed on November 6, HN Sujayendra reportedly convinced Dr Langer that the mutt-owned land would be developed and sold for Rs 1.5 crore. Sujayendra allegedly arranged a meeting with the mutt's Swami, which gave Dr Langer confidence in the project's legitimacy.
Dr Langer gathered funds from his salary, family pension, relatives, friends, and loans, transferring Rs 1.5 crore to Srinivasa Constructions between March and July 2023. Later, Sujayendra claimed there were "technical issues" with the land and demanded an additional Rs 1.2 crore, which Langer paid out of fear of losing his initial investment.
After receiving the total amount of Rs 2.7 crore, Sujayendra reportedly became unresponsive, failed to provide any documentation, and did not complete the land registration process.
When Dr Langer approached the mutt authorities earlier this year, the religious organization's Swami, administrator, and trustee, Gokul Iyenger, allegedly stated they had no knowledge of any such land transaction.
The FIR states that the administrator and trustee subsequently provided cheques totaling Rs 2.7 crore—five cheques of Rs 50 lakh and one cheque of Rs 20 lakh—all of which bounced.
Police have indicated that the mutt's involvement has not yet been established. Investigators are examining whether Sujayendra misused the religious body's name or the seer's reputation to gain potential buyers' trust.
Authorities also revealed that Sujayendra claimed to have connections within the central government and suggested he worked with certain departments. These claims are being verified, with police having written to the relevant departments seeking confirmation.
