Police have registered an FIR against the suspect, Mohsin Ali Abdul Sattar Qadari, 31, on charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust.

According to officials at Mahim police station, the complaint was filed by Ansar Ahmed Abdul Gani, who first encountered Qadari at a dargah in south Mumbai in 2022.

During their meeting at the Muslim saint's tomb, Qadari introduced himself to Gani and his brother Israr Farooqui as a descendant of Prophet Mohammad, claiming he possessed a hair of the Prophet.

The brothers subsequently invited Qadari to their Mahim residence, where he arrived with a glass box allegedly containing the Prophet's hair.

After performing certain rituals at their home, Qadari placed the glass box in their cupboard and locked it, instructing them not to open it until he permitted them to do so.

Days later, Qadari returned to the residence when the brothers were absent. He met their wives and persuaded them to place all their jewelry near the box, promising it would double in quantity within days and bring more money into their household.

Following Qadari's instructions, the women placed their jewelry beside the box. He then asked them to step outside while he conducted additional rituals. Once they left, Qadari removed jewelry valued at approximately Rs 11 lakh from the cupboard and fled the scene.

The deception was discovered when the women later recounted the incident to their husbands.

When contacted, Qadari admitted to selling the stolen jewelry, citing financial difficulties. Gani subsequently filed a police complaint, resulting in an FIR being registered against Qadari under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to cheating and criminal breach of trust.
