Authorities in Uttarakhand's Almora district are on high alert after discovering a substantial cache of highly explosive gelatin sticks near a school. Police recovered 161 gelatin sticks weighing over 20 kg hidden in bushes in the Sult area, prompting an extensive search of surrounding locations.
The explosive materials were found near the Government High Secondary School in Dabara village, which is particularly concerning given the recent discovery of nearly 3,000 kg of explosives in Haryana connected to the Delhi blast.
The discovery was made when Principal Subhash Singh spotted suspicious packets in nearby bushes and immediately alerted law enforcement. Two police teams quickly arrived to secure the area, with bomb disposal and canine units dispatched from Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital districts to assist.
During a methodical search operation, the canine unit detected several packets of gelatin sticks concealed in the vegetation, with additional packets discovered approximately 20 feet away. The bomb disposal squad carefully collected, sealed, and secured all explosive materials.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Devendra Pincha confirmed: "161 gelatin sticks were recovered from the bushes near a school in Dabra village. The police reached the spot. The bomb disposal squad also conducted an inquiry. The nearby areas were also searched."
Gelatin sticks are powerful explosives typically used for rock blasting in construction and mining operations. Authorities are currently investigating why these dangerous materials were brought to the village.
Police have registered a case against unknown individuals under Section 4(a) of the Explosive Substances Act 1908 and Section 288 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). SSP Pincha stated that four specialized teams have been formed to conduct further investigation.
This incident comes at a time when security forces nationwide are maintaining heightened vigilance following the recent Delhi blast and significant seizures of explosive materials. Intelligence sources indicate that certain terror elements may have been planning coordinated attacks across major urban centers, prompting increased security measures and searches throughout the country.
