A stray dog was discovered roaming with the mutilated body of a newborn in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, causing alarm among local residents on Thursday.

The child's body has been sent for post-mortem examination, according to officials.
The incident unfolded when local resident Amit Trivedi noticed the stray dog carrying an object wrapped in cloth near Friends Park. Becoming suspicious, he pursued the dog, which subsequently dropped the bundle and fled. Upon inspection with other residents, they made the horrific discovery of a newborn's body with missing arms and hands, and severe damage to the chest area.
Investigators determined from the umbilical cord that the baby was likely born between 24 and 36 hours prior to the discovery. Police found the child's palm with an IV cannula still attached, suggesting the infant was born in a medical facility.
Authorities are exploring multiple theories, including the possibility of an illegal abortion followed by improper disposal of the newborn in garbage, where the stray dog may have found it. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) South Deependra Nath told NDTV they are also considering the possibility that the child died naturally and was subsequently buried.
Police are gathering evidence from the IV cannula and reviewing CCTV footage from the area to determine the sequence of events and identify those responsible.
