Founder Uday Kotak celebrated a significant milestone for Kotak Mahindra Bank on Friday, sharing reflections on the institution's remarkable 40-year evolution from humble beginnings to becoming a banking powerhouse in India's private sector.
Taking to social media platform X (previously known as Twitter), Kotak reminisced about his entrepreneurial journey's modest start. His post stated: "40 years ago today, I started a company with Rs 30 lakh capital, in a 300 sq ft office in Fort, Mumbai."
He continued by highlighting the growth trajectory, noting that "Today that company, which I ran for 38 years, is Kotak Mahindra Bank."
The heartfelt message included warm wishes for the institution's future prosperity as it continues to evolve in a changing financial landscape. "As this Indian institution navigates changing times, may it prosper," Kotak wrote.
He concluded his anniversary tribute with an emotional message in Hindi: "Happy Birthday… tum jiyo hazaaro saal," extending wishes for the bank to thrive for thousands of years.
The post featured a collection of photographs documenting key moments throughout the bank's history. Notably, one image captures Kotak alongside industrial leader Anand Mahindra and beloved Hindi film actor Vinod Khanna.
The original social media post read: "40 years ago today, I started a company with ₹30 lakh capital, in a 300 sq ft office in Fort, Mumbai. Today that company, which I ran for 38 years, is Kotak Mahindra Bank. As this Indian institution navigates changing times, may it prosper. Happy Birthday…tum jiyo hazaaro saal."
According to Forbes' latest data, Uday Kotak commands a substantial net worth of $15 billion as of November 21, 2025, positioning him at 170th place among global billionaires.
Choosing a different path from his family's traditional trading business, Kotak established a finance firm in 1985 that eventually transformed into a fully-fledged bank by 2003. Kotak Mahindra Bank has since developed into one of India's four leading private-sector banking institutions, further strengthened following its strategic acquisition of ING Bank's Indian operations in 2014.
In 2023, Uday Kotak transitioned from his long-held positions as CEO and managing director, stepping down four months before his planned retirement. Currently, he maintains involvement as a non-executive director on the bank's board.
The financial institution now operates under the leadership of Ashok Vaswani, whose professional background includes significant roles at Citibank and Barclays. Meanwhile, Jay Kotak, Uday's son and Harvard Business School graduate, serves as vice president and co-head of the bank's digital banking initiative, Kotak811.
In a notable business development during 2024, the bank divested a 70% stake in its general insurance operations to Zurich Insurance for $640 million, establishing the joint venture now known as Zurich Kotak General Insurance.
