5.7 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Kolkata: Residents Report "Intense" 30-Second Tremors From Bangladesh Epicenter

Kolkata experienced significant tremors on Friday morning as a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh's Narsingdi, affecting various parts of West Bengal.
Numerous Kolkata residents described the earthquake as "intense" on social media platforms. One resident on X mentioned that their building "shook for 30 seconds" during the event.
Another Kolkata resident shared their experience on X, stating, "I think I just experienced the most intense earthquake of my life; Kolkata was shuddering like a fragile plastic tunnel."
"That earthquake was strong enough to wake someone up from sleep," commented another local on social media.
As a precautionary measure, people in Kolkata and surrounding districts evacuated buildings and gathered on streets. Fortunately, no immediate injuries or property damage were reported following the tremors.
According to India's National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at 10:08 am, with its epicenter located 13 km south-southwest of Narsingdi, Bangladesh, at a depth of 10 km. The tremors were also felt in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka.
The seismic activity extended beyond West Bengal, with residents in Tripura's Dharmanagar, Meghalaya's Tura and Cherrapunjee, and Mizoram's Aizawal also reporting tremors.
Earlier the same day, Pakistan experienced a separate earthquake measuring 5.2 in magnitude, with its epicenter at a depth of 135 km, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology.
