'Strong Father One Moment, Caring Mother Next': Rekha Gupta On PM Modi

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said a plan is ready to address all the problems the national capital faces, while also blaming the previous AAP administration for not addressing the many issues the people faced over the past 11 years.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has outlined a comprehensive plan to tackle the capital's numerous challenges, while criticizing the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for failing to address critical issues during their 11-year tenure. In an exclusive conversation with NDTV, she discussed various topics ranging from Yamuna river cleaning efforts to Delhi's waste management crisis, and shared her perspectives on political leadership including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As the "People's Chief Minister," Gupta highlighted significant achievements in the seven months since the BJP government assumed power in Delhi. "We've accomplished much that was never done before. A Chief Minister of Delhi is now with the people for a full term. We have prepared a comprehensive plan with clear timelines to address all of Delhi's problems, and I remain constantly accessible to citizens regarding their concerns," she stated.

Regarding the Yamuna river restoration, Gupta acknowledged the complexity of the task while expressing optimism about public confidence in the eventual success. She emphasized that her administration has initiated cleaning of tributary drains flowing into the river—a task allegedly neglected under the AAP government. "We've constructed new STPs and launched projects worth Rs 9,000 crore, with approximately Rs 4,000 crore dedicated during this Seva Pakhwada specifically for Yamuna cleaning," she informed NDTV.

Addressing Delhi's waste management crisis, the Chief Minister identified the disparity between daily garbage generation and collection as a major challenge. "Approximately 12,000 metric tons of garbage accumulates daily, yet only 7,000 metric tons are removed. We've set a target to collect 15,000 metric tons daily to effectively reduce this backlog. Already, the garbage mountains have diminished, and we've planted trees in those areas. As we progress toward zero waste, air quality will improve," she explained.

On Delhi's persistent waterlogging issues, Gupta criticized the AAP government, noting that "Delhi still operates on a drainage plan from 1983, and those who complain about waterlogging took no action during their 11 years in power. Half of Delhi's population lacks access to potable tap water and depends entirely on water tankers. We have now developed a comprehensive master plan for the entire pipeline and drainage infrastructure."

Highlighting BJP's commitment to women's empowerment, Gupta asserted, "No other party provides women with as many opportunities in electoral politics as the BJP. Even under Indira Gandhi's leadership, women were notably absent from her cabinet. Similarly, in the AAP government, even women's welfare portfolios were managed by men, and they allegedly assaulted their own MP Swati Maliwal."

Recounting the August 20 attack during a Jan Sunwai event, Gupta admitted disregarding security protocols: "I didn't adhere to security measures and remained accessible during public hearings without implementing screening procedures. Thousands came to meet me, and I engaged with everyone." She emphasized that such incidents would not deter her public engagement, stating, "I will not neglect the 25 million citizens of my state because of someone with a criminal record who commits such acts."

Describing her perception of Prime Minister Modi, Gupta expressed deep respect, calling him both a politician and a saint-like figure. "He demonstrates remarkable humility while exhibiting the strength of a father capable of making difficult decisions. Yet he also shows maternal concern, advising us about self-care, timely meals, meditation, yoga practice, and educational pursuits."

On personal sacrifices since assuming office, the Chief Minister acknowledged missing everyday pleasures like "stopping spontaneously for a meal, shopping, conversing with friends, or enjoying family time. Now every minute belongs to the public. As a sister to this state, I'm committed to fulfilling all these responsibilities."

Expressing satisfaction with ABVP's victory in the Delhi University elections, Gupta stated, "I'm delighted that ABVP has succeeded once again, with three of our office bearers winning. We look forward to supporting their continued efforts, and I'll always be available as their Chief Minister didi." She interpreted these results as evidence of Gen Z's political alignment, adding, "The Congress party consistently deflects blame instead of examining their own failings. They've systematically exploited the country, and now face public rejection."

Regarding allegations of EVM manipulation, Gupta noted that such claims emerge only when BJP wins. "Where is this theory documented? Can someone please inform me about Rahul Gandhi's educational background? His only expertise appears to be misleading the public with falsehoods," she concluded.
