Karnataka Revises Compensation Scheme for Dog Bite Victims in Bengaluru: Private Hospitals Now Funded for Immediate Treatment

Karnataka government has updated its compensation policy for stray dog bite incidents in Bengaluru, now providing Rs 5,000 for injuries and Rs 5 lakh for fatalities. The revised payment structure ensures immediate treatment access at private hospitals, with Rs 3,500 paid directly to victims and Rs 1,500 allocated to the health department trust for medical care.

Karnataka Funds Private Hospitals In Bengaluru To Treat Dog Bites

The Karnataka government has updated its compensation policy for stray dog bite incidents in the Greater Bengaluru Region. Victims who suffer skin punctures, deep bruising with punctures and lacerations, or multiple bite injuries will receive Rs 5,000 in compensation.

While a similar policy existed in 2023, the revised order introduces changes to the payment structure. Of the Rs 5,000 compensation, Rs 3,500 will be paid directly to the victim by the Urban Development Department (UDD), with the remaining Rs 1,500 allocated to the Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust, part of the Karnataka Health Department, for treatment purposes.

This new arrangement enables victims to access immediate treatment at private hospitals, as the government will cover initial medical expenses directly. The policy aims to prevent private hospitals from refusing treatment to dog bite victims.

In fatal cases resulting from stray dog attacks or rabies caused by stray dog bites, the victim's family will receive Rs 5,00,000 as compensation.

All municipal corporations within the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) must establish a Verification and Compensation Disbursement Committee responsible for evaluating cases and distributing compensation to affected individuals.
