UP Man Takes Constable Hostage In SUV To Avoid Traffic Inspection, Arrested

A police constable in Lucknow was forcibly taken hostage in an SUV and driven approximately 10 kilometers after attempting to stop the vehicle for a routine traffic inspection, officials reported on Tuesday.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspect has been apprehended and the vehicle involved in the incident has been seized.

Police officials stated that the incident occurred on November 15 along Shahid Path within the jurisdiction of the Sarojini Nagar police station.

The driver of a Scorpio SUV, later identified as Krishna Kumar Goswami, fled after refusing to comply with police orders to stop his vehicle, causing traffic disruption at Shahid Path Tiraha in Lucknow.

According to the complaint filed by constable Ranjit Kumar Yadav, the incident transpired around 12:45 PM when the black Scorpio, which was operating without license plates, stopped to pick up passengers, prompting traffic officers to intervene.

When the driver initially refused to follow police instructions, he accelerated away with two passengers inside while the constable was hanging onto the vehicle. Police eventually managed to intercept the vehicle near Sewai police post with assistance from Traffic Police personnel.

Goswami, who identified himself as a resident of Amausi Bazar in the Sarojini Nagar area, escaped from the scene while police were questioning the passengers.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Krishna Nagar) Rajneesh Verma confirmed that authorities have registered a case against Goswami for obstructing government work and other applicable charges.

"The accused has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. The SUV has also been impounded," Verma told PTI on Tuesday.

The alarming incident highlights growing concerns about traffic rule violations and resistance to law enforcement in the region.
