A 29-year-old Kerala man has been apprehended by Wayanad Cyber Police for creating and distributing an artificial intelligence-generated video falsely showing a zipline accident involving a woman and child.
The fabricated footage, which quickly went viral across social media platforms, caused widespread panic among viewers.
Police identified the suspect as K Ashkar from Thiruvambady, Thaivelikkam house in Alappuzha district. He was taken into custody on Monday evening following an investigation.
Investigators revealed that Ashkar utilized AI technology to create realistic but entirely fictional visuals depicting a woman and child experiencing a dangerous mid-air incident while riding a zipline. The video was shared through his social media account 'Ashkar Ali Reacts' and gained significant traction online.
Following the video's viral spread, Wayanad Cyber Police filed an FIR on October 30 and launched an investigation that eventually traced the content back to Alappuzha.
According to police reports, this isn't Ashkar's first encounter with law enforcement. He reportedly has multiple criminal cases registered against him, including serious charges such as attempted murder, assault, and drug-related offenses.
The District Police Chief of Wayanad has issued a stern warning, stating that authorities will take strict action against individuals who create and disseminate misleading AI-generated videos that generate fear, promote hatred, damage public trust, or negatively impact the local economy.
