A 62-year-old man has been arrested for issuing a bomb threat to the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL). Police identified the suspect as Rajiv, a diploma holder who resides on Belthur 2nd Main Road, 6th Cross.
Authorities have revealed that Rajiv has been undergoing treatment for mental health conditions at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore for the past five years.
The threatening email was received on the official BMRCL account at 11:25 PM on November 13. According to police, the message originated from a Gmail account and contained threats related to his former spouse.
In the email, he threatened to "blow up one of the metro stations" if his "ex-wife is tortured." His message specifically stated: "If ever I come to know that your metro employees are mentally torturing my past divorced wife, Padmini, after duty hours, be careful, one of your metro stations gets blasted... I am also a terrorist-like PATRIOTIC person against Kannadigas."
Following his divorce 15 years ago, Rajiv has been living alone in rented accommodation. Police report that he relies on financial assistance from family members. Authorities will soon present him before a magistrate.
In a separate but related incident, authorities recently identified a female IT professional, who was incarcerated in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, as the individual responsible for multiple bomb threats sent to educational institutions across Bengaluru.
The investigation began when a public school in the city received a bomb threat on June 14. As similar threats emerged throughout Bengaluru, investigators traced them to Rene Joshilda, a software engineer. Police investigations revealed she had used her romantic partner's name in the threatening emails after he declined to marry her.
She was brought to Bengaluru for questioning on October 28. During her interrogation, she admitted to sending fake threat emails to institutions across multiple states including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Kerala, Bihar, Telangana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana.
