New Delhi:
Shaheen Saeed and Muzammil Shakeel, co-accused in the Delhi bomb blast case, purchased a new Maruti Suzuki Brezza that was allegedly among thirty-two vehicles prepared to transport explosives or deliver bombs, according to sources close to investigators who spoke to NDTV on Tuesday.
NDTV obtained an image showing Saeed and Shakeel, two doctors affiliated with Al-Falah University in Faridabad, Haryana, purchasing the silver Brezza at a dealership on September 25. Sources indicated they made the transaction in cash.
Investigators believe thirty-two vehicles, including the Hyundai i20 that exploded near Red Fort last Monday, were intended for a coordinated "revenge" attack targeting multiple locations. Six sites in Delhi were reportedly scheduled for attacks on December 6, the anniversary of the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.
Several vehicles have since been recovered, including the Brezza registered in Haryana as HR 87U 9988. This vehicle was discovered on the campus of Al-Falah School of Medical Sciences and Research Centre in Faridabad, an institution now central to the investigation.
Authorities also seized a Maruti Swift Dzire containing an assault rifle and ammunition last Monday. Additionally, a red Ford EcoSport with registration number DL10 CK 0458 was found abandoned in Faridabad last Wednesday.
The blast near Red Fort killed 15 people and injured numerous others when the i20, driven by suicide bomber Umar un Nabi, exploded. Umar, a Kashmiri doctor also affiliated with Al-Falah University, reportedly intended to detonate the explosive device near the Red Fort parking area, a tourist zone adjacent to a busy market.
Sources indicate Umar "panicked" following the arrest of his associates Saeed and Shakeel during the broader investigation into a "white-collar" terror network. Apparently unaware that Red Fort remains closed on Mondays, Umar found no crowds upon reaching the parking area.
After waiting for three hours inside the parking lot, he drove away and detonated the vehicle near a traffic signal at Red Fort Metro Station.
Hours before the Red Fort explosion, Jammu and Kashmir Police announced they had dismantled an interstate and transnational "white-collar" terror module linked to Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, an al-Qaeda-affiliated terror group. They also reported seizing 2,900 kilograms of explosive materials, including ammonium nitrate, believed to have been used in the Delhi blast.
