A devastating collision between a bus carrying Umrah pilgrims and a diesel tanker near Medina, Saudi Arabia has reportedly claimed the lives of 42 Indian nationals on Monday.
Here are the key developments regarding the tragic Medina bus accident:
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 1:30 am (IST) in an area known as Mufrihat while the pilgrims were traveling from Mecca to Medina.
According to local media reports, the victims include at least 11 women and 10 children, though authorities are still working to confirm these figures.
Reports indicate that only one passenger survived the tragic incident.
Initial information suggests most passengers on the bus were from Hyderabad, Telangana.
In response, the Consulate General of India in Jeddah has established a 24-hour control room with the number 8002440003.
Additional government helpline numbers have been issued: +91 7997959754 and +91 9912919545 to provide assistance to victims' families.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed deep shock and pledged complete support to affected families. On social platform X, he stated: "Deeply shocked at the accident involving Indian nationals in Medina, Saudi Arabia. Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are giving the fullest support to Indian nationals and families affected by this accident. Sincere condolences to the bereaved families. Pray for the speedy recovery of those injured."
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi confirmed he has been in communication with Abu Mathen George, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, who is gathering information about the accident. Owaisi stated, "I have contacted two Hyderabad-based travel agencies and shared the passengers' details with the Riyadh Embassy and the Foreign Secretary. I request the Union Government, especially EAM Dr S Jaishankar, to bring the bodies back to India and, if anyone is injured, ensure that they receive proper medical treatment."
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has expressed shock regarding the accident and directed officials to maintain close coordination with embassy authorities.
