Authorities at Chennai International Airport seized over 28 kilograms of premium hydroponic cannabis with an estimated value of Rs 10 crore from two female suspects.
NCB officials reported that the women were flagged for inspection due to unusual travel behaviors and suspicious luggage characteristics. The operation was conducted on November 13.
A comprehensive search of their checked baggage revealed 28.080 kg of high-grade hydroponic cannabis that had been carefully concealed to avoid detection systems.
Initial investigations determined that the suspects had acquired the illegal substance in Phuket and were attempting to transport it into India for distribution networks.
One suspect works in real estate and was reportedly enticed by promises of substantial financial gain. The second woman previously worked as a domestic helper in Dubai before relocating to Chennai, where she occasionally takes minor roles in film productions.
According to NCB statements, the luggage containing the drugs was provided to the women at Phuket airport with specific delivery instructions for Chennai. Officials believe the premium "hydroponic weed" was intended for circulation within Chennai, particularly targeting individuals connected to the Kollywood film industry.
NCB teams are currently investigating both the supply chain in Thailand and distribution networks in India to dismantle the operation completely. "We are working to identify all suppliers, financial backers, and intended recipients," the agency stated, confirming that both women have been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The Bureau encouraged public cooperation in combating drug trafficking by sharing information through the National Narcotics Helpline at 1933, guaranteeing caller confidentiality.
In related developments, two Kollywood actors - Srikanth and Krishna - were recently apprehended in separate drug-related cases, highlighting growing concerns about narcotics connections within the film industry.
