Medical Student Found Dead at AIIMS Nagpur: Investigation Underway as Officials Rule Out Academic Stress

A first-year postgraduate dermatology student at AIIMS Nagpur, Samriddhi Pandey, was found deceased in her room. Officials state academic pressure was unlikely the cause due to the relatively structured nature of dermatology studies. The incident has prompted discussions about mental health resources available at medical institutions, while police continue their investigation into this tragic case.

AIIMS Nagpur Student Dies By Suicide, Sources Say Academic Stress Unlikely

A first-year postgraduate dermatology student at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur was discovered deceased in her accommodation.

Samriddhi Pandey, daughter of CRPF DIG Krishna Kant Pandey, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room on Wednesday morning. The Nagpur police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her suicide and registered a case of accidental death at Sonegaon Police Station.

"This student suicide case is both unfortunate and shocking. However, we must defer to police authorities for official comments," representatives from AIIMS Nagpur informed NDTV.

The source further stated, "Everyone at AIIMS Nagpur is profoundly shocked and saddened by this tragic incident. Samriddhi was relatively new to our institution, having joined only two to three months ago."

While student suicides are frequently attributed to academic pressure, AIIMS sources contested this possibility in this particular case: "As a dermatology student, academic stress is unlikely to be a factor. The dermatology department maintains regular working hours from 9 am to 5 pm, unlike other medical specialties that demand more intensive schedules. The workload typically doesn't require late evenings or overnight duties that might contribute to work-related stress."

"AIIMS Nagpur consistently provides counseling services for students, conducts stress-management workshops, and offers various de-stressing programs. Since this matter is under police investigation, only law enforcement officials are authorized to provide further details," the AIIMS sources concluded.
