New Delhi:
The Left parties sub-coalition within the Mahagathbandhan alliance contributed significantly to the opposition's devastating performance in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election on Friday.
In 2020, the Communist Party of India and its two offshoots, CPI Marxist-Leninist and CPI Marxist, contested 29 seats collectively and won 16, achieving a 55 percent success rate.
A comparable performance would have been greatly beneficial in this election, especially with mounting challenges faced by their larger alliance partners - the Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress.
Unfortunately, this did not materialize. By 11 am, the Left front was leading in only eight seats, despite contesting a larger number of 33 seats this time, and was on the verge of a complete defeat.
Other Mahagathbandhan members performed equally poorly.
Tejashwi Yadav's RJD, which emerged as the single-largest party last time with 75 seats - one more than the BJP - had secured only 35 seats. The Congress saw its representation decrease from 19 seats in 2020 to just six this time.
This has paved the way for the BJP and Janata Dal United-led alliance to achieve a decisive victory.
Amit Shah had predicted this outcome twice, telling NDTV he anticipated winning over 160 seats.
His prediction appears accurate, with the National Democratic Alliance leading in 193 seats compared to the Mahagathbandhan's 48.
The opposition was never expected to win according to forecasts; NDTV's compilation of 13 exit polls suggested they would secure fewer than 90 seats, substantially less than the 110 they obtained five years ago.
However, the magnitude of this defeat has caused considerable surprise.
