The Cyber Crime Branch of Rajasthan Police has released an urgent alert regarding a novel cyber fraud scheme. In this scam, criminals pose as law enforcement officers and intimidate citizens by referencing serious criminal incidents, such as the Delhi car explosion on November 10.
This advisory, issued under the guidance of DGP Rajiv Kumar Sharma, seeks to increase public awareness and prevent unnecessary alarm. According to Vikas Sharma, DIG (Cybercrime), the fraudsters contact potential victims claiming their mobile numbers or Aadhaar cards have connections to alleged criminal activities. They use intimidation tactics, offer to facilitate meetings with high-ranking officials, and request sensitive information or payments during video calls, supposedly for verification purposes. The requested details often include personal information, banking credentials, and UPI data.
The police have recommended that citizens remain composed, refrain from sharing sensitive personal details, banking information, Aadhaar particulars, or other confidential data with anyone claiming to be a police officer, and avoid clicking on any questionable links or messages.
If approached by these scammers, individuals should promptly report the incident to their local police station, call the emergency number 112, or contact the Cyber Helpdesk at 9256001930 or 9257510100. Victims of financial fraud can also reach out to the National Cyber Helpline at 1930, submit a complaint through cybercrime.gov.in, and notify their bank to block any suspicious transactions.
