A significant security breach occurred at the recently launched Puthur Zoological Park in Thrissur, Kerala, resulting in approximately 10 deer being killed by stray dogs. This incident has triggered substantial questions regarding the preparedness and safety measures implemented at the facility, which has been operational for less than a month.
On Tuesday, wildlife specialist Dr. Arun Zacharia led a team to conduct a thorough inspection of the park and commence a comprehensive investigation.
According to park officials, the definitive cause of death will be established following the completion of post-mortem examinations.
When approached for comment, Zoo Director Nagaraj refrained from providing any statement.
The Puthur Zoological Park had recently initiated advance registration for prospective visitors. Currently, entry is restricted to educational groups from schools and colleges, with the general public opening date still pending announcement.
Encompassing 336 acres, the Thrissur Zoological Park at Puthur is marketed as the second-largest zoological facility in Asia and India's pioneering "designer zoo."
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan formally inaugurated the facility on October 28. The expansive park is designed to house 534 animals representing 80 different species across 23 natural, open enclosures. The transfer of animals from the existing Thrissur Zoo to the new location is being executed in stages.
Despite numerous requests, zoo authorities have declined to release CCTV footage related to the incident.
