The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has announced statewide demonstrations across Tamil Nadu tomorrow, featuring a significant protest in Chennai, challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being conducted before the 2026 Assembly elections.
According to DMK allegations, this electoral revision process is being rushed during the northeast monsoon season with inadequately trained enumerators, potentially resulting in substantial errors and omissions. The party has highlighted confusion in enumeration forms and criticized the process for lacking transparency and proper preparation.
From a political perspective, the DMK interprets the SIR as an effort to disenfranchise voters opposing the BJP, referencing approximately 64 lakh names removed in Bihar during a comparable revision. The party has petitioned the Supreme Court requesting a stay on the Tamil Nadu exercise, contending that numerous legitimate voters could lose their voting rights.
The AIADMK, Tamil Nadu's primary opposition party and BJP ally, has supported the SIR and submitted an impleading petition to the Supreme Court backing the Election Commission's initiative.
Both the BJP and Election Commission have rejected the DMK's accusations. The electoral body maintains that the Bihar revision process was highly successful with zero claims and objections filed, and insists the current revision adheres to proper procedures.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has mentioned voter roll irregularities across multiple states including Karnataka and Haryana, characterizing the SIR as "theft of votes."
Previously, the Supreme Court instructed the Election Commission to ensure transparency and include Aadhaar as an acceptable verification document. Opposition parties allege the electoral body has not fully complied with these directives.
As the main opposition party at the national level and several opposition-governed states express distrust toward the Election Commission, concerns are increasing about whether such skepticism might undermine the credibility of the electoral body - and whether it should address all doubts and questions more transparently to maintain public confidence in India's electoral system.
