In a significant operation, the Forest Department conducted a raid in Sakhare village within Palghar taluka, Maharashtra, resulting in the seizure of approximately 4,000 kilograms (four tonnes) of red sandalwood, comprising 200 branches. The confiscated wood has an estimated market value exceeding Rs 12 crore.

Red sandalwood, commonly referred to as "red gold" or "blood sandalwood," commands substantial prices in international markets, with values ranging from Rs 2 crore to Rs 5 crore per tonne based on quality.
This enforcement action represents the inaugural and most substantial operation against red sandalwood trafficking in Palghar district, highlighting the expansion of illegal smuggling activities into Maharashtra.
The successful seizure resulted from specific intelligence information received by authorities. Reports indicate that the suspects involved in this illegal operation have fled, while investigators continue their pursuit and further examination of the case.
