Kottayam:

A young woman in Kerala's Kottayam district was reportedly subjected to severe physical and mental torture under the guise of black magic rituals. Police reported that she was forced to consume alcohol and smoke beedi as part of an exorcism attempt.

According to officials, the woman's partner and his family members brought a sorcerer to their residence last week, claiming they needed to "remove a ghost from her body." During this ordeal, she endured hours of torment.

The victim's father filed a police complaint after noticing his daughter's deteriorating mental condition. Authorities subsequently registered a case and began an investigation into the matter.

Police arrested three individuals on Friday in connection with the incident: Shivadas (54), the sorcerer; Akhil Das (26), the woman's partner; and Das (54), her partner's father.

The complaint states that the partner's mother arranged for the black magic ritual, alleging that the woman was possessed by evil spirits of her deceased relatives.

"The black magic ceremony began around 11:00 am and continued until nightfall. I eventually lost consciousness," the woman revealed to media outlets on Saturday.

She further alleged that during the ritual, she was forced to drink alcohol, smoke beedi, consume "sacred ash," and endure various forms of physical abuse, including burns.

Police reported that the sorcerer, identified as the primary suspect, had gone into hiding after turning off his phone following the incident. He was later apprehended in the Muthoor area of Thiruvalla.

Authorities noted that the partner's mother, also named as a co-accused, remains at large. The arrested individuals were later presented before a court and remanded to custody.
