In areas of Delhi where daily wage workers and laborers frequently miss meals to conserve money, the prospect of a warm, economical meal is garnering attention. The Delhi Government unveiled its 'Atal Canteen' initiative on Friday, which will provide nutritious food for just Rs 5 at 100 locations throughout the city.
The first stage of this program is scheduled to launch on December 25, coinciding with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birth anniversary. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta explained that the initiative aims to offer food with dignity to impoverished individuals, laborers, and low-income households. "Atal Canteen will become the soul of Delhi, a place where no one should have to sleep hungry," she stated.
Each canteen will offer two daily meals consisting of dal-chawal, roti, and vegetables, serving approximately 1,000 individuals daily. The government will subsidize costs to maintain the fixed price of Rs 5 per meal.
Government officials indicate that an inter-departmental committee has already determined locations, menus, and operational guidelines for the initial 100 canteens.
To ensure transparency and prevent irregularities, meals will be distributed using a digital token system rather than manual coupons. CCTV cameras will monitor all centers in real time through DUSIB's digital platform.
The kitchens will be furnished with LPG-based stoves, industrial RO water systems, and cold storage facilities. Food samples will undergo testing by FSSAI and NABL-accredited laboratories, and operators must submit monthly reports regarding hygiene, staff health, and safety compliance.
The Chief Minister noted that the initiative draws inspiration from Vajpayee's belief that "poverty is not merely a lack of money, but a lack of opportunity." She emphasized that the program aims to ensure every Delhi citizen can access nutritious meals without compromising dignity.
"This is not charity, it's about fairness," Gupta remarked. "Workers who help build the city shouldn't have to skip meals to survive in it."
Once operational, the government intends to expand the network based on public demand and feedback. Officials also mentioned that the scheme will generate employment opportunities through self-help groups and local community kitchens managing the outlets.
