Police are approaching the case with caution, requiring medical certainty before reaching any criminal conclusions.
In Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district, authorities plan to exhume a six-month-old infant's body today for additional post-mortem examination after the father suggested the death might not have been natural but potentially deliberate.
The accusations have emerged within the context of what investigators describe as a relationship between the infant's mother and another woman.
Initially, it was believed the baby died during breastfeeding earlier this month. Authorities registered an unnatural death case at that time without conducting a post-mortem examination. The infant was subsequently buried on the family's agricultural property.
Police sources indicate the father recently contacted authorities after discovering messages, photographs, and videos evidencing the relationship. He has informed investigators of his suspicion that the baby may have been harmed due to pressures connected to this relationship.
A high-ranking police officer told NDTV that determining the cause of death remains the primary focus before deciding on further actions. "We need to first establish if the baby was murdered. If confirmed, legal proceedings will follow. Otherwise, their relationship is not our concern," the officer stated. "Initially, we registered an unnatural death case without performing a post-mortem," the officer added.
Currently, authorities are treating this as a case requiring medical clarity before drawing any criminal conclusions.
A medical team is scheduled to perform the post-mortem examination following today's exhumation. These findings will likely determine the investigation's direction.
