J&K Launches Craft Heritage Courses, Stipend For Students

The Jammu and Kashmir government has introduced a new initiative called the Chief Minister's Scheme for Introduction of Heritage Courses, aimed at preserving and revitalizing traditional crafts that face challenges from mass-produced alternatives.

Srinagar officials announced that 500 students will be enrolled in specialized heritage craft courses across polytechnic colleges and industrial training institutes. The program encompasses seven distinct traditional craft disciplines and includes financial support for participants.

Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister, officially launched this initiative today, emphasizing its importance for cultural preservation. "The scheme will revive seven traditional craft courses across 25 units in government ITIs/polytechnics with an intake capacity of 500 students, with stipends for trainees and honorarium for instructors," Abdullah stated.

The Chief Minister highlighted that these courses are specifically designed for "preserving heritage and promoting skill-based livelihoods in J&K."

Financial incentives form a key component of the program. Students will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000, while instructors will be compensated with monthly payments of Rs 15,000 for theory classes and Rs 12,000 for practical instruction, according to a government representative.

An official statement explained that the initiative seeks to protect traditional craft skills while encouraging younger generations to participate in heritage-based economic activities, effectively integrating traditional craftsmanship into contemporary skill development frameworks.

Abdullah expressed that this program demonstrates the government's dedication to safeguarding Jammu and Kashmir's centuries-old craft traditions while simultaneously creating employment opportunities for young people.

"Our heritage crafts are not only a reflection of our cultural identity but also a source of dignified livelihood. This initiative will serve as a bridge between tradition and opportunity," the Chief Minister remarked.
