The convoy of Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar came under attack at Nabadwip in West Bengal's Nadia district on Wednesday night.
Kolkata:
Union Minister of State for Education and former West Bengal BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar's convoy was allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress activists in Nabadwip, Nadia district, on Wednesday evening.
Earlier that day, Majumdar had participated in several party events across Nadia district. While returning, his convoy reportedly became caught in clashes between Trinamool Congress and BJP supporters. During the confrontation, one vehicle in his convoy was allegedly targeted by activists from the ruling party.
According to Majumdar, the attack on his convoy was entirely unprovoked and executed by Trinamool Congress leaders and supporters who appeared to be intoxicated. He further claimed that numerous BJP activists were brutally assaulted by individuals backed by the ruling party, with some suffering serious injuries.
By the time this report was filed, Majumdar's convoy had departed from the location.
The local Trinamool Congress leadership has rejected these allegations. Biman Saha, chairman of the Trinamool Congress-administered Nabadwip Municipality, stated that tensions erupted at Nabadwip's main bus stand after BJP supporters allegedly attacked a local office belonging to INTTUC, the Trinamool Congress' trade union wing.
Saha claimed that when INTTUC supporters were demonstrating near the bus stand, they were again targeted by local BJP supporters, resulting in altercations between the opposing groups.
Recent months have witnessed multiple incidents of BJP leaders' convoys being attacked in West Bengal. In October, BJP Lok Sabha member Khagen Murmu from Maldaha (Uttar) constituency in Malda district was attacked in Jalpaiguri district, allegedly by Trinamool Congress activists. Murmu sustained severe injuries and remains under medical treatment.
Similarly in October, BJP Darjeeling MP Raju Bista's convoy was allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress activists in Sukhia Pokhari area of Darjeeling district.
