Kolkata:
Police reported on Wednesday that a father abandoned his 10-year-old son at the India-Bangladesh border following a dispute with his wife, in what can only be described as a disturbing incident.
This distressing event occurred Tuesday night at the Basirhat border in North 24 Parganas district.
Left alone far from home, the young boy began crying in fear and distress. Compassionate local residents, moved by his situation, came to his assistance and notified authorities.
Officers from Basirhat Police Station brought the child to their facility and established contact with his family.
The boy's home is situated in the Kathpol area within the jurisdiction of Ashoknagar police station in North 24 Parganas district.
According to reports, his parents Pintu Ghosh and Madhavi Ghosh frequently engaged in arguments over various matters. During a recent escalation of their conflict, the mother left her son at her in-laws' residence and returned to her paternal home. Several days had passed since the mother departed, leaving the child with his paternal grandparents.
Police stated that on Tuesday night, Pintu Ghosh traveled to his in-laws' house intending to leave his son with his mother.
When the mother refused to take custody of her son, the father made the unconscionable decision to abandon the child at the India-Bangladesh border.
Carrying his son's bag of clothes, Pintu placed the boy on the back of his motorcycle and rode toward the India-Bangladesh border in the Basirhat area.
According to police reports, after reaching near the border, the father instructed his son to dismount from the motorcycle, then turned around and sped away into the night, leaving the shocked child alone.
In the dark, cold night, far from his parents' home and in unfamiliar surroundings, the boy stood alone, trembling with fear and disbelief.
When the child began crying, nearby residents rushed to help after hearing his distress. They comforted him and contacted the Basirhat police station. The boy was also provided with food.
Subsequently, he recounted his experience to police officers and provided his home address.
Officers reassured the frightened child that they would take him home and contacted his parents.
"The boy has been safely returned home. We have informed both parents and are providing counseling regarding their irresponsible behavior," stated a senior officer from Basirhat district police.
