Ujjain Stray Dog Crisis: 11 Attacked in 48 Hours as Public Safety Concerns Mount

A disturbing incident occurred when a five-year-old child was attacked by a stray dog, resulting in one of the canine's teeth becoming embedded in her hand.

The stray dog situation in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain has reached alarming levels, with 11 individuals suffering dog bites in the Mohan Nagar area within just 48 hours. Among the victims was a man who was attacked while asleep in his own home.

Local residents have expressed growing fear, with many now hesitant to even open their doors due to the threat.

One particularly distressing case involves five-year-old Pari, who was attacked while enjoying playtime outside her residence. Her father, Kuldeep Nagar, described the traumatic experience: "A stray dog suddenly pounced on her and bit her hand twice. Blood was oozing and, to our shock, one of the dog's teeth got lodged in her hand." The family immediately rushed the child to medical facilities, where she is currently receiving treatment.

Community members report that these dogs are traveling in groups and attacking unprovoked. Resident Yogesh Prajapat recounted how he was bitten on the leg while attempting to prevent a dog from entering his home. In another shocking incident, Golu Solanki was bitten while sleeping inside his house, stating: "I woke up screaming and saw the dog was inside my room."

Despite the 11 attacks occurring within a 48-hour period, residents claim the Ujjain Municipal Corporation has failed to implement effective measures. According to locals, their numerous complaints have only resulted in perfunctory visits and photo opportunities from officials.

This is not an isolated occurrence. Just last month, five individuals, including two children, were simultaneously attacked by dogs in Rishi Nagar. While the municipal authorities dispatched a dog-catching team following public outcry, animal rights advocates protested, temporarily suspending the operation. Eventually, some dogs were captured, but residents maintain that the situation has only deteriorated.

Official statistics reveal that over 20,000 people suffered dog bites in Ujjain during 2024. By June this year, the city had already recorded more than 10,000 incidents. Health authorities note that children and elderly individuals represent the majority of victims—populations least able to defend themselves.

Experts caution that the stray dog population in the city continues to grow unchecked, indicating a complete breakdown of sterilization and vaccination programs. "The civic administration has failed to control this public health crisis," remarked a senior local physician, who requested anonymity.

The dangers extend beyond direct attacks. Last week, a software engineer lost his life near Nanakheda when a stray dog suddenly ran onto the road, causing his vehicle to overturn. In a separate incident, a seven-year-old child sustained severe injuries, while a 70-year-old individual suffered a tendon tear following an attack.

The crisis in Ujjain reflects a broader national issue. The Supreme Court of India has summoned chief secretaries from all states to present strategies for addressing the stray dog problem. The Madhya Pradesh High Court is currently reviewing a petition submitted by Sagar-based attorney Akhilesh Moni Kesarwani, who has called for immediate state intervention.

"The problem has become a nationwide epidemic. India has between 15 to 60 million stray dogs, and more than 10,000 dog bite cases are reported every day, most involving children and senior citizens," Kesarwani stated.
