Six individuals lost their lives when a Korba passenger train crashed into a stationary freight train near the Lal Khadan area on the Bilaspur-Katni section in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district on Tuesday.
The collision was extremely violent, causing the front carriages of the passenger train to be completely mangled.
Images from the accident location reveal the passenger train's engine and leading coaches severely crushed, while emergency personnel continue their search for survivors trapped within the wreckage.
Rescue operations comprised of railway officials, local administration representatives, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams who rushed to the scene immediately following the accident.
Among those safely rescued was an infant. Medical teams and ambulances have been deployed to the site, with physicians treating critically injured passengers inside the train itself as the debris hampers quick evacuation efforts.
The crash has significantly damaged the overhead electric wiring and signaling infrastructure, disrupting rail traffic throughout the route.
Numerous express and passenger trains have been cancelled or rerouted, with alternative transportation being arranged for stranded travelers.
Technical crews are working overnight to repair the tracks and restore the electrical systems.
Railway authorities have initiated an investigation to determine what caused the accident. Initial reports suggest either a signaling malfunction or human error may be responsible.
