Telangana Police have apprehended 10 individuals, including a woman who allegedly orchestrated the kidnapping of her own husband while demanding a ransom of Rs 1 crore in Hyderabad. Authorities confiscated three cars, two two-wheelers, and multiple cell phones from the suspects, as reported on Tuesday.
According to Hyderabad Police officials, the main suspect, M Madhavi Latha, collaborated with nine accomplices in the abduction of Mantri Shyam.
The investigation began when Amberpet police received a missing-person report filed by a woman named Fatima on October 29. Acting on this complaint, law enforcement gathered technical evidence and conducted an extensive search operation, eventually tracking the victim to Banjara Hills.
In a fortunate turn of events, Shyam managed to escape from his captors on October 31. He subsequently provided police with a comprehensive statement, identifying his wife, Madhavi Latha, as the mastermind behind the abduction plot. She reportedly hired Vundy Durga Vinay (32) and other accomplices to monitor Shyam's movements before executing the kidnapping for ransom. Vinay, along with associates Katta Durga Prasad and Katamoni Purushotham, carried out the plan.
Shyam informed police that Latha had promised her co-conspirators Rs 1 crore. The kidnappers transported him in multiple vehicles to Vijayawada and issued ransom demands for his release on October 30. The following day, they brought him to Hyderabad to facilitate withdrawal of the ransom from a bank in Banjara Hills, but he managed to escape before any money could be collected.
According to police, Latha's alleged intention was to gain control of her husband's properties by forcing him to sign documents under duress, with subsequent plans to kill him.
Investigators revealed that Latha, Vundy Durga Vinay, and Katta Durga Prasad initially met at Bandlaguda and GVK Mall in Banjara Hills to devise the kidnapping scheme. Vinay and Prasad actively participated in planning, with Prasad recruiting accomplices, conducting surveillance of the victim's residence in DD Colony, and renting an adjacent flat to monitor his movements. Though the group successfully executed the abduction, their ransom attempt failed following the victim's escape.
Authorities have registered a case under applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Amberpet Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.
