Patna: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav announced on Tuesday that if voted to power in Bihar, his government would provide women with the complete annual financial assistance of Rs 30,000 in January next year.
This announcement comes just two days before the first phase of voting begins in the state. The move appears designed to challenge the ruling NDA's 'Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana', under which over 1 crore women have already received Rs 10,000 in their accounts to establish their own businesses.
During a press conference in Patna, Yadav, who serves as the opposition Grand Alliance's chief ministerial candidate, stated that women would receive Rs 30,000 under their 'Mai Bahin Maan Yojana' on January 14, the day of the Hindu festival 'Makar Sankranti'.
"In my interactions with women across numerous locations, I've observed that all mothers and sisters in Bihar are enthusiastic about the 'Mai Bahin Maan Yojana'. People are saying this scheme will deliver economic justice to them," he informed reporters.
In a statement captured on video, Yadav declared, "After we form the Government, on Makar Sankranti - 14th January, we will deposit Rs 30,000 for an entire year into the accounts of women under 'Mai Bahin Maan Yojana'."
The Opposition's recently released manifesto had promised women a monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500 beginning December 1, totaling Rs 30,000 annually for the next five years.
Yadav clarified that they have decided to transfer the entire amount on January 14 based on "the demand of the mothers and sisters" of Bihar.
Additionally, he promised that farmers would receive bonuses above the Minimum Support Price (MSP): Rs 300 per quintal for paddy and Rs 400 for wheat.
The former Bihar deputy chief minister also committed to ensuring that teachers, police personnel, healthcare workers, and other government employees would be posted within a 70-kilometer radius of their home districts.
He reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
Bihar's elections are scheduled to take place in two phases on November 6 and 11, with vote counting set for November 14.
