Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla highlighted India's growing prominence as an investment destination during the 'India@100: An Age of A New Dawn' event in Kolkata on Monday, emphasizing that entrepreneurs worldwide are choosing India for their business ventures.
According to Birla, India has established itself as a global investment hub, attributed to its robust democratic framework and transparent governance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. The event marked the commencement of the 125th anniversary celebrations of the Bharat Chamber of Commerce.
During his address, Birla commended PM Modi's 'minimum government' policy, which he believes has significantly reduced bureaucratic hurdles and fostered industrial growth throughout the country. He underscored India's diversity and democratic strength as key factors in positioning the nation as a global center for innovation and research.
Birla emphasized that India's democratic system, deeply rooted in its cultural heritage and citizen participation, has remained "intact" since gaining independence. "We have celebrated the 75th anniversary of Azadi in a country known for its diversity, and democracy will continue to remain intact. Rapid economic and social changes are taking place and more are expected in the future," he stated.
The Speaker further observed, "With the resources available in India and the rapid expansion of infrastructure—roads, railways, and air connectivity—the country's economic progress is developing at a fast pace."
In his remarks about West Bengal, Birla acknowledged the state's significant historical, cultural, and literary contributions to India. "People from Bengal contributed greatly to the freedom movement. This state is different from others. Discussions about Bengal are always meaningful," he remarked.
Birla also reflected on the Chamber's historical journey during the pre-independence era, particularly highlighting Kolkata's important role as a leading industrial and cultural hub during that period.
The event featured other notable speakers including Naresh Pachisia, President of the Bharat Chamber of Commerce; H. M. Bangur, Chief Patron; and N. G. Khaitan, Chairman of the 125th Anniversary Celebrations Committee. Established in 1900, the Bharat Chamber of Commerce stands as one of Eastern India's oldest apex trade organizations.
