College Student Abducted, Sexually Assaulted Near Coimbatore Airport

A female college student was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a group of three individuals near Coimbatore airport on Sunday night, according to police reports. The student, who attends a private college in Coimbatore, was traveling in a car with her male companion when the incident occurred. The perpetrators allegedly attacked her friend, abducted the woman, transported her to another location, and sexually assaulted her.

Police officials have confirmed that the survivor is currently receiving medical care. "We can confirm the sexual assault occurred, and the survivor is currently under treatment and safe. Seven specialized teams have been deployed to locate the suspects. We will provide updates as soon as there are developments in the case," a senior police officer informed NDTV.

Authorities have initiated an extensive search operation to locate and apprehend the suspects. They are analyzing surveillance footage and interviewing potential witnesses in the vicinity.

This assault occurs amid increasing public concern in Tamil Nadu regarding sexual crimes against women. Opposition parties have been vocal in their criticism of the state government's handling of law and order issues.

BJP leader K Annamalai described the Coimbatore incident as "utterly shocking" and stated, "Since the DMK government assumed power in Tamil Nadu, these recurring crimes against women clearly demonstrate that criminal elements have absolutely no fear of legal consequences or police action. From DMK ministers to law enforcement personnel, there is an evident tendency to shield sexual offenders."

He further criticized, "Rather than utilizing the police force to ensure public safety or maintain order, the DMK government employs them exclusively to arrest critics of the administration, leaving Tamil Nadu in a state of complete disgrace today." He added that Chief Minister MK Stalin, who oversees the police force, should "hang his head in shame."

In response, DMK spokesperson Dr Syed Hafeezullah acknowledged the unfortunate nature of the Coimbatore incident while asserting, "Tamil Nadu takes decisive action against perpetrators. Cases are expedited for prompt justice. Laws have been strengthened, and women's safety has been prioritized. Legal processes will be followed in this case as well."
