Assam police have established a dedicated hotline for citizens to report suspected fake doctors operating in the region.
Guwahati:
The Cachar district police in Assam have stepped up their campaign against medical fraud, with two more individuals apprehended in the past two days on suspicion of practicing medicine without proper qualifications.
Since August this year, authorities have arrested a total of 17 quacks and fraudulent medical practitioners from Cachar district as part of Assam's broader initiative to combat quackery in the healthcare sector.
Among those recently detained are Supal Roy (41), an alleged quack from Chotojalenga Part II under Dwarbond police station, and Indrajit Roy (39), a fake doctor who resides in Tatpara, Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.
Law enforcement officials caught Supal Roy in the act during an operation targeting his pharmacy in the Rosekandy tea estate under Dwarbond police jurisdiction, where he was found illegally practicing medicine.
In a separate police action, Indrajit Roy was apprehended at Maa Ayurved in E&D Colony, Tarapur, where he worked as a visiting doctor prescribing medications despite having no valid medical credentials according to police reports.
"Our operation against fake doctors has been ongoing for the past two months, resulting in the arrest of 17 fraudulent practitioners from various areas across Cachar. Within just the last two days, we have apprehended two more fake doctors operating in different locations," Sen stated.
To facilitate community involvement in this initiative, authorities have set up a dedicated reporting system. "We have established a special number, 6026903329, for Cachar residents. Anyone with information regarding fake doctors can call this number to share details," Sen added. He emphasized that the operation will continue as police have intelligence about additional unlicensed practitioners in the district.
