Kolkata:
The Calcutta High Court has ruled that the planned rail and road blockade by the Kurmi community scheduled for September 20 is unconstitutional and illegal. The community had called for this action to push forward their demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
This ruling was issued following a petition submitted by the Purulia Chamber of Trade and Industry challenging the proposed blockade.
After the court's decision, the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Purulia jointly addressed the media. They urged citizens to refrain from participating in the protest and cautioned that strict legal measures would be taken against those who disobey the order. Law enforcement officials confirmed that comprehensive preparations have been made to prevent any disruptions.
Concurrently, the Purulia Citizens' Forum conducted a protest march opposing the blockade call and delivered a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police's office.
As of now, Ajit Prasad Mahato, the chief advisor of Adivasi Kurmi Samaj, has not commented on the court's ruling.
Armed with the Calcutta High Court's order, the district administrations of Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, and Paschim Mednipur conducted meetings to implement measures before the Kurmi agitation call. Additional security forces will be deployed to ensure minimal inconvenience to the public during the protest.
