The Arunachal Pradesh Police stated they are considering legal action against misinformation spreading (representational)
Guwahati/New Delhi:
Arunachal Pradesh Police have issued a stern warning against disseminating false information after an X user published a fabricated post claiming Indian Army casualties in a confrontation with insurgents.
In response to the deceptive post by a user identified as 'Rasush' (@RasushAnkita), police in this strategically important border state confirmed that no such incident had occurred.
The malicious post falsely claimed high casualties among Assam Rifles personnel during a supposed firefight with Naga insurgents. The user also spread disinformation suggesting insurgents had captured several military positions.
Arunachal Pradesh Police warned they may pursue legal action against the X user.
"Spreading misinformation is a cognizable offence. Please verify facts before posting," the police stated.
"Deliberate circulation of fake news will invite legal action. No such incident [was] reported from the ground," they added.
Police sources informed NDTV they are taking the attempt to spread disinformation about armed forces in this sensitive border region very seriously. They have not excluded the possibility of formal action using technical and legal measures.
Assam Rifles' Successful Operation
In contrast to the false claims, the Assam Rifles successfully conducted a series of well-coordinated counter-insurgency operations across the northeast, effectively countering repeated attempts by insurgent groups - ULFA(I) and NSCN-K(YA) - to target security forces in the weeks before October 22, according to sources.
On October 16, NSCN-K(YA) launched an attack on a camp in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district, which was quickly thwarted by a prompt response, sources reported. The following day, ULFA(I) attempted a similar attack on a camp in Assam. The security forces responded decisively, eliminating an insurgent. They subsequently apprehended an overground worker who had assisted in planning the attack.
In response to these incidents, the Assam Rifles intensified operations and deployed an extensive counter-insurgency grid supported by modern surveillance assets, drones, and intelligence-based hi-tech teams, sources said.
The enhanced security measures culminated in a successful ambush on October 21 near Namsai, South Arunachal Pradesh, resulting in one ULFA(I) insurgent casualty and the recovery of weapons and supplies.
According to sources, the insurgent groups are now reportedly retreating, with their networks disrupted and leadership under pressure. The Assam Rifles' determined efforts continue to maintain peace and stability in the region, reinforcing their reputation as the 'Sentinels of the North East'.
