Two students of a private university in Assam have been detained after a girl student alleged she was raped, a senior police officer told reporters today.

Following allegations of rape by a female student, police have detained two students from a private university in Assam, according to a senior police official's statement today.
The alleged incident occurred on the night of September 13 in Panikhaiti, approximately 55 km from Guwahati.
Police were only informed about the matter on Tuesday, after which they immediately registered a case, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Amitabh Basumatary told reporters.
"Our investigation revealed that on the night of the 13th, one female and five male students had gathered for a party. The female student returned to her room while intoxicated. Upon waking the next morning, she realized she had been raped by one of her male companions," explained Mr. Basumatary.
"We have identified and arrested two suspects. Since they are minors, they have been presented before the Juvenile Justice Board in Kamrup Metro," the DCP stated.
"I will not disclose additional information that you already possess. The investigation is ongoing, and we have already apprehended the accused. As they are minors, we are not revealing their identities," Mr. Basumatary further noted.
While police have detained two students, the private university has suspended all five students involved, all of whom are from neighboring Manipur.

In a suspension notification, the university registrar named all five students, including the two minors who, according to the DCP, have been referred to the JJB.
The victim reportedly hails from Tripura, according to information shared on X by Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma.
"A girl from Tripura was allegedly raped in Guwahati. I have spoken to the victim and offered all help to her. I appeal to everyone to not speculate and ensure that the identity of the girl is not revealed. We will ensure justice is given to the victim," Mr. Debbarma stated.

Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 prohibits disclosing the identity of minors in conflict with the law with certain exceptions, while Section 72 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 makes revealing the identity of rape and sexual assault survivors punishable with imprisonment up to two years.
