Mohammad Azharuddin Takes Ministerial Oath in Telangana Cabinet

Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin embarked on a significant new political chapter as he was sworn in as a minister in the Telangana Cabinet on Friday.

The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma during a modest yet formal ceremony at Raj Bhavan, bringing the distinguished former batsman into Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's Congress government.

With Azharuddin's inclusion, the cabinet strength increases to 16 members. This strategic political appointment ensures minority representation within the state Cabinet and comes at a crucial time before the Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election.

Speaking exclusively to NDTV shortly after his swearing-in, an emotional Azharuddin shared reflections on his political journey and this momentous occasion.

The former cricket captain attributed his political advancement to the unwavering support from state leadership. "CM Revanth Reddy has always been my big supporter," Azharuddin told NDTV, highlighting their enduring relationship.

He pointed out a remarkable date coincidence connecting to his illustrious cricket career: "My cricket debut was also on December 31, and today is October 31. It feels like destiny coming full circle."

Regarding the Jubilee Hills constituency and its political implications, Azharuddin appeared unconcerned about any pressure. "I have got the MLC nomination, so not contesting the Jubilee Hills seat does not matter," he explained, referring to his pending nomination to the Legislative Council under the Governor's quota.

During the interview, Azharuddin also celebrated the recent triumph of the Indian Women's cricket team, which defeated Australia on Thursday to advance to the finals.

"I missed watching the match yesterday, unfortunately, because of all the preparations for today's ceremony," he admitted. Nevertheless, he commended the team's performance: "Jemimah (Rodrigues) did a great knock; I will watch it later. I congratulate the India Women's Cricket Team on their victory."

The newly appointed minister added, "My best wishes to the India team for the World Cup. I am hoping, praying, and rooting for the Indian Women's cricket team to bring the trophy home."

While portfolio allocations are forthcoming, sources suggest Azharuddin is being considered for either the Sports or Minorities Welfare portfolio. His appointment makes him the first minister from the minority community in Revanth Reddy's cabinet.

Azharuddin took his ministerial oath in English, affirming his dedication to the state's development as he officially transitioned from cricket to politics.
